Aquino Spirit Sweeps Butuan

Despite the intense heat on the morning of October 10, 2009, the people of Butuan City trooped to the airport to meet Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and Pinky Aquino-Abellada, sisters of Sen. Noynoy Aquino who arrived from Manila to grace the launching of MABUTING PILIPINO MOVEMENT for NOYNOY-MAR which is initiated by the friends of Noynoy headed by Engr. Serge C. Pascual. As a staunch advocate of volunteerism, Engineer Pascual and the friends of Senator Noynoy have succeeded in rallying thousands of Butuanons to warmly receive the two daughters of Ninoy and Cory Aquino. The visiting party also included Dr. Pete Prado, who was the DOTC Secretary during the Cory Aquino administration, businessman Dr. Buddy Zamora, Eldon Cruz, husband of Ballsy and Manolo Abellada, spouse of Pinky.

From the airport, the group proceeded to the Bishop’s Home in barangay Ampayon to pay their courtesy on the Archbishop of Caraga who received them at his residence. Prior to their meeting with the Bishop, the Aquino sisters together with their husbands and Dr. Pete Prado, met with the officers of First Community Cooperative (FICCO), a Jesuit-run coop with 125,000 members all over Caraga who were having their officers convention at the St. Peter’s  Seminary Retreat House inside the sprawling Bishop’s Home compound. And after Ballsy and Pinky had given their short messages they were mobbed by the coop officers who took turns in posing with them for a picture-taking session.

After their meeting with the Bishop, Ballsy and Pinky, followed by a long caravan of vehicles, proceeded to Barangay Ampayon where an enthusiastic crowd of yellow flag-waving Cory Aquino diehards await their motorcade to pass by.

From Ampayon, the motorcade traveled the 5-kilometer distance to the downtown where people, flashing the signature Cory “Laban” hand gesture in response to the same hand sign by Ballsy and Pinky as they waved to the crowd, lined the streets just to take a glimpse of the Aquino sisters who were clearly appreciating and enjoying the warm welcome given them by Butuanons.

The motorcade ended at about 12:30 pm at the residence of Engr. Pascual where the group had lunch. Also partaking the same food that were served them were the representatives of the 86 barangays of Butuan, tribal chieftains and tribe members and other sectoral leaders who were all eager to meet the sisters of Senator Noynoy.

After lunch, a short program on the “Presentation of Sectoral Leaders and Turn over of the Piso for Change” collection was held.  Ballsy and Pinky gave their messages to the gathering, and as they talked about Senator Noynoy and also of their illustrious parents Ninoy and Cory, the people listened attentively and gave them heart-warming applause after their talks.  Curiously, Pinky was the political type of the two and she also admitted that she is kind of “madaldal”.  Engr. Serge Pascual also delivered an inspirational message and called on the people to support the “Mabuting Pilipino Movement for Noynoy-Mar,” for which he received a resounding response.

After the program, Ballsy and Pinky had to oblige numerous requests for photo-ops as the people wanted to have their picture taken with them.  But since they were scheduled to fly back to Manila at two in the afternoon, the siblings and their party left hurriedly to the airport.  They were again accompanied by the same long line of vehicles of their avid supporters who would have wanted them to have an overnight stay in Butuan.

With the warm welcome that Ballsy and Pinky had received from the people of Butuan, it is quite obvious that the famed Cory magic has not fizzled, and has remained very strong even after her death. And with the torch of struggle against all forms of shenanigans in government started by his parents now passed on to him, Senator Noynoy Aquino can expect that the people of Butuan will back him overwhelming in his presidential bid in next year’s election.
